On May 19, the Chargé d'Affaires Luis Moreno and his wife Mrs. Gloria Moreno were guests of honor at the ORT English Access Micro-scholarship graduation ceremony which took place at the newly inaugurated American Corner in Akko. The Chargé d'Affaires welcomed the guests and delivered greetings to the students, teachers and coordinators of the ORT Access program which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. He congratulated the students for their hard work, and handed out certificates of excellence to 15 exceptional students, he also spoke about the importance of education and commended the students for accomplishing so much and saluted their efforts in working diligently in their after school hours to achieve such high results. He wished the students luck, and assured them that they were on a journey to success. Each graduating student received a certificate personally signed by the Chargé d'Affaires who underlined the importance of this scholarship and acknowledged that the lack of English language proficiency is the single biggest barrier to entry into local universities and colleges, and acceptance into State Department programs. The students felt blessed to have been selected to participate in the Access program which has opened doors to a brighter future for many young Israelis coming from low socio economic situations.
The English Access Microscholarship program supports mission goals of mutual understanding and bilateral relations by contributing towards the dialogue of promoting education, democracy, coexistence, and civil society. Another objective of the program is to use the English classroom as a conduit to raise the awareness towards U.S. history, society and values
